Finishing Well
A stage race will take its toll on the body, especially a distance of 200km. This will be exacerbated by the humidity expected in Costa Rica in August (up to 70%).
It is advisable to bring strapping of some sort in case of injury due to the elevation gain and loss (3329m on stage 6).
Hydration is of paramount importance, and fluid requirements in the humidity will exceed those in any other conditions. Make sure you are equipped with plenty of isotonic drinks and ensure you replace any salt lost through sweating.
As is the case with long races, the feet are likely to suffer if adequate care and repair work is not taken. Footwear should be at least two sizes larger than normal, to accommodate swollen feet.
