I first tried Hi-Pro Sports Energy during the build up to the 2001 London Marathon. I was midway through a fairly hectic winter/spring schedule including Tough Guy, Quest Races, Ace Races and culminating in the Adrenaline Rush 2001. Because of this schedule the Marathon was going to be a bit of a training run, taking things nice and easy and saving a bit in the tank for a two day adventure race the next weekend.
Taking Sports Energy for several days prior to the race I was impressed by it’s ease of mixing and the palatability of both the tangerine and lemon flavours. Too often powdered energy drinks are way to sweet when mixed to the recommended ratio however Sports Energy provided a refreshing drink making consumption a pleasure rather than a chore.
Drinking immediately prior to running I had no gastric problems with mix. The jog went well and a comfortable 3:30 later I could reflect on a very pleasant run. Even more pleasant was the complete lack of any muscle soreness the following week
The following weekend I used Sports Energy as my primary fluid/energy source during the two day Ace Race. During 14 hours of racing over the weekend I used Sports Energy before, during and after the various legs (trail running, mountain biking and kayaking) and found it to be an excellent fuel for such events easily mixing in a CamelBak while on the go. Apart from my legs packing up during the final 10km trail run (maybe the marathon had taken a wee bit out of me!) my energy levels and strength were excellent throughout the event and, as with the marathon, had no muscle soreness during the following days.
The Adrenalin Rush (a 6 day Adventure Race) was going to be the metal test of Sports Energy but unfortunately 24 hours into the race I had a bike crash which ended my race. However it did fuel me through a 7 hour kayak and 100km mountain bike leg during which my legs felt incredibly strong and, having passed my race rations onto my team-mates, found all of my sachets of Sports Energy had been used up!
A 55g sachet will give 200 k/cal in 4 servings, however I found a sachet mixed in 2 litres of water (1 camelbak) to be very palatable. As a new product in a very competitive market Sports Energy more than fulfils all of the criteria needed for an energy drink, I will continue to use it for training and racing and would recommend anyone partaking in endurance events to try it.
