Gehwol Fusskraft (foot preparation cream)

Foot treatment and care is a subject close to the hearts of all participants in adventure and ultra races. No matter how fit you are, if your feet break down, it’s often, literally, the end of the road. So, it’s always good news when you come across a product that really does work.

Prior to the 2000 Marathon des Sables I adopted the “hardening” surgical spirit route. I ended up with feet like a hobbit but was pretty confident they wouldn’t blister…. I was wrong. My feet weren’t as bad as some others and I did make a fairly major sock cock-up on the fourth day (see Desert Prat diary) but I still wasn’t happy about the way they held up.

Therefore in my preparation for the 2001 Himalayan 100 Mile Stage Race I adopted a different approach. I pampered my feet totally. Diligent pumicing and daily application of Gehwol Fusskraft resulted in feet softer and smoother than the proverbial babies backside. I came upon this cream via my mother-in-law who brought it over from Holland to help with a particularly stubborn case of athlete’s foot I had. Gehwol produce a variety of creams, the two most relevant being the Green and Blue. Both will moisturise and soften the feet, the Blue being thicker and the Green containing a natural anti-fungal agent. Aside from totally clearing up the athlete’s foot I completed the race without a single blister… a very pleasant surprise.

I recommended the cream to a friend prior to her participation in the Trans 333 and she also suffered minimal blistering.
