Tour D'Afrique 2007

Media Release

6000 KM'S DOWN, 6000 TO GO -
Week 10 of the Tour d'Afrique Bicycle Race
Tour d'Afrique, the annual 12 000-kilometer bicycle race/expedition from Cairo to Cape Town, billed as the world's longest and most grueling bicycle race, has completed its tenth week of the 17 week odyssey, marking the official half way mark of the Tour.

"It's official. We've crossed the half way mark of the Tour!" said Field Correspondent, Rachel Dobson.

Hot temperatures and intermittent rain in Tanzania this past week created ideal conditions for the hard core mountain bikers as the spectacularly scenic dirt road between Arusha and Dodoma turned to mud.

The conditions presented huge challenges for the heavy support trucks which were frequently bogged down in the muddy tracks over the past week. In 'biking heaven' the mountain bikers sped past the trucks beating them into camp each day by hours. The film crew found themselves in '4x4 heaven' as they documented the thrills, spills and drama of the week from 'Baobab', the Toyota Fortuner.

"It's been a week of rolling hills, undulating surfaces, rocky roads and scorching temperatures." said Dobson. "The road took us across Mtema Dam, past Masai cattle herders, through many rural villages and gave us never ending glimpses of the lush green hills and vegetation that have characterized Tanzania so far."

The Tour arrived in Iringa on Saturday, bringing to a close the section known as 'Snows of Kilimanjaro' with the section winners being Dutch racers, Adrie Frijters and Eva Nijssen in the men's and women's race.

After a rest day in Iringa on Sunday, the riders set off on Monday on the fifth stage of the Tour – "Malawi Gin".

This 10 day, 1104 km section from Iringa, Tanzania to Lilongwe, Malawi will take the cyclists along parts of beautiful Lake Malawi as they cycle through verdant hills teeming with banana and tea plantations.

'Malawi Gin' also signals the beginning of an almost continuous stretch of paved road through Malawi, Zambia and Botswana, which is something the racers on cyclocross bikes are looking forward to.
