Corsica Raid 2004
The Corsica Raid 2004 will take place in the coming week in the French island of Corsica in the Mediterranean. The race uses the best of the island’s brutal terrain – the maquis, the brittle limestone rockfaces, the canyons and rivers, and the Mediterranean - to stage a European classic race. This year is the tenth anniversary year of the race, which started in 1994.

There are two courses within the race, the Aventure course, which lasts approximately a week, and the Challenger course. The Aventure course starts on Sunday morning with a five day non-stop stage. Teams will reach the end of the stage by Wednesday night. The Challenger course is a three-day race that will start on Thursday morning alongside the Aventure teams. Both races will culminate together over next weekend.
This year the Corsica Raid has been brought forward to May after many years of being held in September. In fact during its early years the race was actually held in May so it is returning to its roots. The countryside looks better earlier in the year, and with snow and consequently more water around it means that certain sports – high mountain travel and canyoning for instance - will be better too. Competitors can expect to hike, mountain-bike, navigate in the mountains, rock-climb and follow via ferrata, and canyons, and of course sea kayak off the 1000 kilometre shoreline.
There are 15 teams at the start line of the Corsica Raid this year, with competitors from countries as far afield as Brazil, America, Norway, Russians, Scots and Kyrgyzstan. The details of the course remain a secret for the moment, but all will be revealed to the competitors on Saturday. We will be following the fortunes of two teams within the race, Pedini Cucine and Sea Clean International.
The racers are arriving at the moment, gathering in Porto Vecchia. Over the next couple of days they will be doing their last minute preparations, nervously looking forward to the Sunday morning start. Follow the teams during the course of their adventures over the next few days. And For more information about the race, check www.corsicaraid.com
