Augrabies Extreme

The Augrabies Extreme is a self-sufficiency stage race held in the Northern Cape area of South Africa. It is divided into six stages, which run from bivouac site to bivouac site, where the competitors rest before the following day’s stage. The race is based on the popular Marathon des Sables which is held annually in Morocco. The organisers provide water, tents and medical support. The rest is up to the competitor.

Augrabies Extreme 2006
This year the Augrabies will take place from October 5th – 15th. Cost is from £1000 to £1300 depending on the package you choose. This is purely for the race and accomodation before the race. You will need to get yourself to South Africa and to Augrabies Falls National Park, depending on the package you choose, where the race begins.

How Tough is it?
Very. In temperatures up to 40c competitors are faced with running with a fully loaded pack containing everything they will need for the week. The combination of the weight of the pack and the heat will increase the chances of blisters, chafing and muscle strains. xxThere is likely to be a high drop-out rate.
